Stone Age

Concert Band Level 0.5

4/4 Time, C Minor, First 6 Notes.

"Stone Age" is a new grade 0.5 work from Matt Neufeld. This piece features a memorable melody (that everyone gets to play), challenging-sounding but easy to play rhythms, and it only uses the first 6 notes of the concert Bb scale!

This very approachable .5 band work was inspired by prehistoric cave paintings, and is a fun way for your students to imagine themselves transported back to ancient, primitive times.  It uses primarily the first 6 notes of the Bb concert scale, along with low drums, open 5ths, and player vocalization to help evoke this ancient time before writing was developed.  Starting with a mysterious slow section, “Stone Age” soon launches into a fast section which will give your students a sense of accomplishment that they can play a piece this evocative and technical.

This piece is the winner of the 2023 Grand Mesa Young Band Composition Contest in the Level 0.5 Category, and is now available to purchase online through J.W. Pepper, or from your local music store.
